From Pharmacology to Farming

July 15, 2009

Today I made a field visit in southern Cumberland County. This farmer is a retired Pharmacologist. He moved from Florida to Pennsylvania and has decided to start raising pedigree Jerseys. Currently he has two gorgeous yearling Jersey heifers. They have been through a heat cycle and he is waiting for the next cycle to AI them with sexed semen. He is hoping to internally grow his herd to 6. These Jerseys are the most spoiled animals I have ever seen. The are even called to dinner with the ringing of a dinner bell. This man has contacted basically everyone who is anyone in the ag industry for help. His goals are to be self sufficient with feed, sell jersey heifers to farmers in the region, and to one day raise and show a Supreme Champion at the World Dairy Expo.

In addition to cows, he is also managing pasture, a hay field, and a few acres of corn grain. This farmer is a prime example of how no matter who you are or what you did, you can do anything if you put your mind to it.
